to see
what is
behind
the red door.

summer life

summer life
on the porch
continues.
a lunch
with the
girls,
orange lilies
from the garden,
vintage
tablecloth
and a
cement truck
adding
to the soundscape.
(i was too busy
having fun to take
more photos).

is
the prize?

summer is...

summer is when we have
dinner outdoors
everyday
(weather and pesky insects
permitting).
iced tea, a hastily composed
salad,
and home baked
pain à l'ancienne,
amazingly good.
the recipe from
peter reinhart's
the baker's apprentice.

g20

g20,
security fences, barriers, gates,
military helicopters, people wearing
striped pants marching around,
and an artificial lake somewhere,
not a pretty sight.

market report

there was a lot of construction noise and
activity in front of the café. this
did not deter me from enjoying my
americano and lemon square.
nothing really new at the market
this week.
brought home a potato assortment,
mixed greens and new to me
russian kale,
more tender than
the usual variety, worth trying.
what is available at
your local farmers' market?

faded green

the most inspiring surfaces
can be found
in lane ways.
the faded green/turquoise
is my current it colour,
tricky to replicate.

mint tea

one plant
my garden produces
in great abundance
is mint.
this is the season's
first glass of garden
grown mint tea.
the aroma is
intoxicating
(in a good way).
and after infusing
i only add a little
spoonful of
evaporated cane
juice, perfection.

this is what i see
at the top of my work table.
i will be working on my
drawings for the next
few days,
wishing everyone a
good weekend.

cool weather

cool weather and rainy days
inspire baking.
the recipe for the oat bran bread
came from peter reinhart's excellent
book whole grain breads.
from another book
the experiment with low fat
crusts for the aged gruyere and mushroom
tart convinced us that regular crusts
are preferable. however the tart
was delicious,
with fresh greens
from the market.

on the way to the market

the worse for wear alligator
was spotted in a shop window
and a few shops over the
perky poodle.
had lunch at a colourful
busy café, grilled veggie
sandwich.
up the street the
familiar peaked tents
of a farmers' market
beckoned.
it is still early in the
growing season,
but oh, the morels.
i took some home
and tender greens
red green onions,
also rhubarb.
there was beautiful sea
asparagus, purple
kohlrabi and super radishes.
what i liked best,
the growers talking
about their produce.
